Introduction
I am in the process of hosting a technology elective I teach in an online course management system: Course Sites by Blackboard. In order to view my course, you will need to request to log-in as a student. To do this go to http://scaggs.coursesites.com and then click on "Online Portfolio". You will then need to click on the button that says "Contact Instructor and Enroll in this Course".
Context
I begain to create this course in CEP 820, Teaching K - 12 Students Online. Before choosing to host my course in Course Sites, I explored many course management systems such as Moodle and eFront. I had originally wanted to go with eFront, but I learned that even though the courseware is free, you have to have a server to host the program. Since my school did not already have this set up, my instructor suggested I look into Course Sites by Blackboard, which was free and hosted! I absolutely LOVE Course Sites and its compatibility with Soft Chalk to create interactive lessons with formative feedback.
Educational Application
As with all forms of technology, online courses have many educational applications. Online courses can be used in many educational settings, from fully online courses to hybrid (blended learning) courses. My particular technology course falls into the "blended learning" category as my students will have the ability to receive all of their instruction online, but they will take the course in a face-to-face setting, so help is readily available.
Technologies Used
* Course Sites by Blackboard
